Word Meters

Mar 28, 2009

I’m not a tidy person. I’m really not. Not even a little bit. In fact, if you aimed the word slob in my direction, I wouldn’t even have enough pride to duck.

However, I am organised. I love office supplies including folders, staplers, pens (oooo), and my favourite has to be binder clips. I never ever turn down a trip to the office supply store.

In that same vein, I also love charts, graphs and spreadsheets. I even chart my housework (which rarely gets done) on a spreadsheet. My sad and ever-growing todo lists are colour-coded and pie charted and graphed out the wazoo.

So, as you can imagine, I love word count meters! It makes all the work worthwhile when, at the end of a writing session, I can add a microscopic bar of colour to the word meter on my blog. I can’t tell you how happy it makes me.

I was using a lovely one called Zokutou, but sadly the website is now down, and my meters all broke.  However, I found a replacement at a site called honorless.net.  The great thing about this meter is that you can actually save the page to your computer, and you’ll have the script forever and can even run it offline. So should their site disappear, you can still update your word meters, and because they do not use images, the purtitude of your blog doesn’t depend on their meters.

Don’t you just love how so many people will create something wonderful and then give it away free on the internet?  So smooches to the folks at honorless, for aiding my word-tracking obsession! ♥

  1. I used to love the Zokutou word meter and was gutted when it disappeared during one busy NaNoWriMo month. Like you, I found a freebie online that I can update by myself.

  2. I am exactly the same way. Basically a slob but with little corners of my life that absolutely must be organized. I love fabric and patterns and sewing notions, although I don’t sew that often and have a closet with all of my treasures organized and I just love to open the door and stare at it sometimes.

My other corners are my linen closet (sad, isn’t it?) and iTunes. I am ruthless about organizing my iTunes library.

And I love word meters except that they point out my basic flaw. I am way too wordy!

  3. neat stuff, thx nixy :D

  4. Thanks so much Nixy, my Zokutou metres broke too and I couldn’t find a suitable replacement so have been doing without for the last couple of weeks. I shall go to this site right now.
Oh and I love the phrase, ‘if you aimed the word slob in my direction, I wouldn’t even have enough pride to duck.’ So eloquent, and soooo like me…..
But I know where all the files are on my laptop!

  5. Very cool, Nixy.
I’m going to check that site out..sounds good.

    …I love your writing too.

  6. Thank you for this word meter. I’ve been looking for something to replace Zokutou, and have now added it to my site.

  7. Thanks for this post. I’ve been looking for something like this for a while now. Hope you don’t mind, but I did a little blog on this find. A ‘how to’ of sorts talking about some of the html and changes that can be made. I also made sure to link back to you.

    Thanks again.
