WAG #9 Mocking the Cherry

This week’s exercise was:

“WAG #9: Warning!” Last week the topic was to make something ugly sound beautiful, so this time let’s do the opposite! Choose an unfamiliar object (in other words, one you have no history with) that strikes you as beautiful, appealing, or somehow desirable etc… some ideas might be: a child, a sunset, an attractive shop window, a scenic view, a piece of art, an appetising meal in a restaurant… and write about it in such as way as to make it unappealing or even disgusting, frightening or repulsive to your reader.

If you’d like to do your own and post it on your blog, all are welcome to join! Instructions here.

mock-cherry

The pale pink petals of the mock cherry tree have littered my driveway even as tiny weeds heroicly poke their heads through cracks in the brickwork. The cheerful confetti smells sweet and yet the source stands barren and haughty, blocking the line of sight between me and my retired neighbour. Beneath the blossoms it hides, fruitless and bitter, dark and craggy. Come winter we will once again see it for what it is, but for now it dons the mask of spring.

I actually liked the sound of the mock cheery tree, I bet when they bloom the driveway looks beautiful. I know it’s not what you were going for, sorry, but I think flowers, even weeds, are lovely.

    Cheers Nixy.

    Lovely Nixy.

When I read it out aloud it was like a poem. Almost moved me to tears. But then I’ve alwaybeen a romantic at heart.

  3. Nixy says:

Aw, thank you both! Yes, I found this week’s topic difficult! I’m curious if others have too!

  4. Wow, yes, very much like a poem. Loved it.

I found this week’s topic difficult too, even though at first I didn’t think I would.

  5. You paint a beautiful picture Nixy. But much like the weeping willow tree, the roots get into the home and clog up the drain. Then the lovely willow loses its wispy romantic ambiance.

  6. Marsha says:

Those insidious cherries! Bad, bad flowers. Loved it, Ms Valentine!

  7. Iain Martin says:

Bonsai prose : )) Very nicely done Nixy. I agree that your piece had a pleasant poetic lilt.

  8. Hi, Nixy. Sorry I missed last week. I’ve been catching up on this week’s a little late, and think it’s interesting to see how everyone else tackled this little challenge. So many great pieces. Loved yours.

  9. Hi Nixy,

Lovely! I’m still waiting for our cherry trees to bloom-sigh. Be thankful it’s a mock cherry- ours have fruit that falls and stains the sidewalk and anything underneath. :)

To me this week was easier…hmmm, what does that say about me?
