Mmm, Bacon

Editor Angela James tweeted about bacon bookmarks yesterday, and I also noticed this article in The Argus:

A rasher of bacon was found in a returned book by a Worthing librarian.

The lender had used an object usually found between two slices of bread rather than pages as a bookmark.

This was just one of the oddities artist Dan Thompson, of Lanfranc Road, Worthing, has come across while collecting quirky items found in second-hand and library books for a decade.

I don’t think I’ve ever used food as a bookmark before (This would be before my Sony Reader days, naturally), however I have used odd things like a cork coaster when I couldn’t find a movie ticket stub and the book didn’t come with a “20% off!” sticker that I could fold in half (obviously you don’t want the sticky part of the sticker to be in your book, or you’d forever be starting said book on the same page!)

I noticed the reaction of most people who commented on these stories was about the oddity of sticking bacon in a book, I thought of two things… #1 That’s a tragic waste of bacon. Although I haven’t eaten red meat in about 8 years, bacon is the one aroma that can get my mouth watering for it. #2 People are reading! (Considering that stupidity seems to be the #1 tag on this blog, it’s refreshing.)

  1. …wonder what the book was…one of a set, maybe. Volumes I,II & III have rashers of bacon; IV has a lettuce leaf; in V & VI slices of bread….imagine what he might have done with a set of encyclopedias.
