Flash In The Dark

This week I noticed that the flash pieces I wrote on my ND140 Twitter account were much darker than is usual for me. Odd, considering that I’ve been pretty happy this week. (Still basking in the afterglow of the new laptop.) I can’t really explain it… I suppose I’ve always thought a writer should be able to go to the dark, scary places just as easily and comfortably as the happy places if they wanted to be able to connect to a reader on any real level.

Not sure if my “flashes” are really very good. I certainly don’t agonise over them the way I do some things. But it’s been a fun exercise and so I’ll keep sharing.

So here are the latest:

The music twanged her nerves and clusters clenched her temples before she had even pushed the door open. Resentment precluded reason.

The scurrying footfalls of humans did not hold her interest, nor did the seeping ruby blood that spread over the grey paving stones.

She kept the pills in an empty film container in her sock drawer. She didn’t plan to kill herself but she liked knowing that she could.

Do you write flash fiction on Twitter? Let me know, and I’ll add you to my Twitter List!

  1. I don’t write flash but I enjoyed these – especially the third :)

  2. Dark or not, that last one is super! Active! Tense! I know that woman and can guess what drives her.

  3. Let me see:

A minstrel, a vampire, and a desperate woman all in one. Yes, they are dark, but the darkness adds depth.

  4. No, I don’t do the micro flash on Twitter. I use it to point to my longer flash fiction. But I know there is a lot of great micro flash going on. Speaking of which, that third one definitely falls into that category – it’s terrific.

  5. I haven’t seen that much micro-flash or written any myself. 140 characters sounds hard.

I once wrote something that might’ve been considered micro-fiction which I later used to expand into a flash fiction piece, which is going to be expanded into a short story.

  6. I’m in awe of anyone who can condense their thoughts to 140 characters – and have it be so awesome! I like the last one, too.
