WAG: The Audition
She mumbled, then realising her mistake, she leaned forward, colliding with the microphone. The thud made everyone wince.
“Sorry. sorry,” she said.
“Could we get on with this?”
“Yes, sorry.” She scrambled with her notes. “Umm. Everything is going to be all right.”
Silence.
“That’s it?”
“Umm, yes,” she said.
“Look. I know you think you could do a better job as the voice in her head, but surely you can come up with something better than that. At least the current announcer has pizazz. Attitude. Yanno, style?”
“Umm, yeah, about that. I’m just sorta thinking that, um, well, something with a little less style and a little more, um, well, kinda uplifting.”
“Uplifting.”
“Well, yeah. Like: Everything is going to be all right.”
Another long pause.
“Don’t call us, sweetheart.”

This week’s Writing Adventure Group theme #21: “Message in a Bottle” It’s part of human nature that we sometimes wish we could communicate with our younger selves, our unreasonable selves, our subconscious selves, our self-destructive selves, our more innocent selves, or any number of other us-es that we all seem to have within. In this week’s WAG, consider the way we talk to ourselves, the tapes we play inside our heads, and write a piece: fiction or non-fiction, about yourself, a character, or someone else. As usual no limits and no rules. One-two-three Write!
All writers and bloggers are welcome to join the Writing Aventure Group.
Here’s who else has done WAG #21:

Hi
I’m so drained to be able to write to my younger self and tell me off or give me a good kick up the proverbial! LOL! But I really enjoyed reading this! Everything is gonna be alright!! Listen to that voice – it speaks the truth.
Take care

If I went back to my younger self, I would give her positive feedback. That younger me is already being too negative on herself; she doesn’t need more.

@Old Kitty – Love your nickname…it conjures an elderly, but sleek, cat wearing (what else) ’50s catseye glass frames, pencil in one paw, book of crosswords in the other.
@Helen – yanno,it didn’t even occur to me to say something gentle to her/my younger self. Doesn’t today. Jezzzus, merry, and ho-say–I despaired because I was gonna wag my finger in her face. shit. I’ve become my mother. Just shoot me.
India, I’m loving your audition. That’s what we want to hear, need to hear, have to hear: It’s going to be allright.

I’d need the positive feedback, too.

I liked this scene. It’s great how the dialogue was enough- I could see the character and situation without much description. Good stuff!

I feel for her.
This definitely made me laugh. It reminds me of moments I had when I was younger that were incredibly awkward and embarrassing at the time but pretty funny to think about afterwards.
