Bad Writing Advice
I wrote out a big, long, funny post about my miserable week, and then WordPress ate it. Honestly I don’t think I have the wherewithal to write it again — my brain cells are fried from being, well, miserable for the past week (health issues, mostly).
So instead of trying to recreate the magic, I’m going to just give you a link to a good article about writing, which I had planned to share at the end of my rant. Hee… you guys got off easy this time: getting the good stuff without having to read the rant!
It’s an article called 11 Types of Bad Writing Advice. Too often we writers allow ourselves to be limited by the experiences of other people. That’s just crazy, and this bit of anti-advice is a great read.

I’m sorry World Press ate your post. I’m even sorrier about your miserable week.
Good article, reminding us there’s no right way to write.
Oh no!! Are you ok now? I hope so!!! I hope this week won’t be so miserable for you! Oh dear!!
Thanks for the link – I’m all for bad writing advice (all 11 of them!) so off I go to check it out!
Take care!

Don’t you hate it when technology eats your stuff? Email does that to me a lot. I’ll write a long, inspired note to a friend and there’ll be a technological hiccup that wipes it out. You just can’t recreate the magic a second time.
Thanks for the link!
I hate when my work is lost like that! I’m sorry I haven’t gotten to your interview questions, yet. I will!
Yes, lost work sucks – especially if the week isn’t going as planned to begin with. Hope you’re feeling better and thanks for the link
I hope you’re feeling better soon! Thanks for the link

I saw myself giving some of that bad advice–oops–one especially, “don’t start a sentence with there are,” and a short list of other beginnings I think lead to wordy explaining. Hope my students don’t believe it a prohibition they must follow FOR LIFE.
Good list; thanks for the link.

Hope you are feeling better soon and so sorry about the gobbled words.
You know, I saw some atrocious writing by some young whipper snapper named Ray Bradbury… Oh? You’ve heard of him? Really? But he broke almost all those rules I keep reading about… Successful? Really? Well I’ll be damned.
Yes, you need to be very careful about following writing advice. I think there are only two real rules: 1) Write. 2) Edit. Repeat as often as possible.

I hope you’ll feel better soon! And thank you for the link.
Sorry to hear that you’ve had a bad week. I wish you a better one, starting now.
WordPress sometimes works in mysterious ways. Perhaps it gobbled up your post in case you regretted the rant at a later date?
Great link. Thanks for sharing!
