Title Quest Part 2

As you may remember, last week I posted about searching for a new title for my epic fantasy novel, which is currently in serious edits.

The votes went something like:

(The) Bestowed = 7
Beguilers(ed) = 5
Inseers = 1
The Sibling Prophecy = 1

New Suggestions were: Mindfuck (hehe), MindSight, Touched, Cursed Ones, Augurs, Diviners, and Forbidden

Of the suggested ones, I rather like MindSight.

Just to be awkward, I’m going to throw some new ideas that have arisen as I’ve edited my way through the first 1/2 of the manuscript:

Book of Dreams

The Lost Prophecy

The Last Prophecy

Both Last and Lost are appropriate. Of the two, I sorta like Last better, but it’s still a tossup. Book of Dreams is a translation of Bal Treth, a series of prophetic journals at the heart of the story.

I’ve renamed my MS “Book 1″. Yes, there is a Book 2, it’s half-written and already titled: Spirits of Light and Shadow. See.. that has such a nice ring to it! Why can’t my first book title be so easy!

    I don’t think the titles involving the word ‘Prophecy’ would go down well with editors/readers. There are so many prophecies in fantasy that it’s now become something of a cliche, so having it in the title would only give the whole book that cliched feel.

    I’m voting for (The) Bestowed too, it sounds lovely and it’s intriguing!

    I was trying to come up with something, but I’m not sure I know exactly what the beguilers do with the power that they have. Do they read minds? Telekinesis? Telepathy? See the future? Knowing that might help focus on the title. Do they have visions? Visionaries?

    MindSight is an intriguing title. That could work. Of the three new ideas, I prefer The Last Prophecy, as well. It sounds more compelling as a story – Book of Dreams is a bit too wishy-washy and The Lost Prophecy sounds too much like a Dan Brown title.

    Book of Dreams! I read a lot of fantasy and that’s a great title. The first batch, the first, Bestowed, sounds too Romancy to me and Beguilers is probably a word most Americans can’t even read, let only understand. Inseers is interesting but maybe too geeky and I agree with the other post about using Prophecy. MindSight isn’t bad. Since I don’t know what your book’s about, I should really just shut up. :)

    I like either The Bestowed or Mindsight. The three new ones you suggested just don’t stand out to me.

    I definitely like Mindsight the best – different from a lot that’s out there, but gives a good clear image to the reader.

    Hmmmm…

    I’m not a big fan of ‘Prophecy’. I like ‘Bestowed’ best!

    Either The Bestowed (definitely with a ‘the’) or MindSight, love both of those. Leaning towards the first, if I had to pick just one.
