Happy Thought
With all the stress and work and worry that goes along with being a human being, it’s good when sometimes you have a happy moment. My favourite type are the small, but unexpected things.
Yesterday I was sitting in the car, waiting for a Certain Highlander to get the food from the local takeaway place, and I looked up and saw a hot air balloon. I can’t explain why, but hot air balloons always make me feel a little happy. It’s not that I want to go up in them. I really don’t have a head for heights. There’s just something simple, quiet, and, darnit, nice about them.
Have you had any unexpected happy moments lately?

Lots of them. Watching lizards always does it for me. Watching a mum and her toddler dancing in the park in the pouring rain. Rediscovering a necklace I’d misplaced.
Some years ago, I was suffering from severe depression. I pulled myself out of it by keeping a daily diary, focused solely on happy things that had happened to me that day. I’d write about having a nice cup of coffee in the morning, being smiled at by a lady in the library, seeing an interesting cloud formation, finding an interesting Web site, hearing a nice piece of music, and so on. It helped me think about all the positive sides to my life and stop worrying about the things that were getting me down. There was always something good to say, and it’s now an ingrained habit to reflect on those little moments and smile to myself as I relive them.

Awwww hot air balloons are so lovely – and yes very peaceful to watch!
Well seeing a sunflower coming through my geranium hanging basket made me very happy!
I hope you enjoyed your takeaway!
Take care

Hello from a new follower.
I just know that once I leave this laptop, I am going to remember a couple of unexpected happy moments. In the meantime, I’m having trouble thinking of some. Typically I find peace with music and I have to have that everyday. I like it when our cat comes to me and then quiets down as soon as I cradle him into my arms. We also like to watch birds feeding in the back yard. Of course our cat likes that, too, but for other reasons!
If I can think of an unexpected one, I’ll come back and let you know.
Thanks for asking.

Actually, the mention of the hot air balloons made me smile and I can’t believe I’ve never seen one in real life.
@Matt -What a great idea (your happy journal). It’s so easy to focus on what’s not going right, but we could all do with spending more time being greatful for the little things.
@Cate -Really? Now that’s a shame. I see them fairly often here during the summer. At least a couple times a month.

@India-I had a medical test run last week, preceded by a troubling sense. I closed my eyes to visualize a calm, lovely, quiet scene and your face appeared — just popped up — right there in my head.
Felt like, well, a skyful of hot air baloons.
