Faery Blood Book Cover
I love book covers. I like looking at other people’s covers, I like voting on my favourites in contests and polls, and I love seeing what friends’ covers look like when they finally get them from their publisher. In fact, it’s driving me bat-shit crazy that my own publisher hasn’t send me the artwork for the Ordinary Angels cover yet. I was probably more excited (and scared) about that than anything else in the pre-publishing process.
I even enjoy designing covers. I’ve probably made a mock-cover for every book or story I’ve written. I rarely share them, but I love making them because they help get my creative juices flowing. Sometimes, for the ones for my own eyes only, I put ‘NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER’ on the top and make them my desktop image (double the motivation!)
Since we’re allowed to put up a cover or “inspirational image” on the NaNoWriMo website on our profile, I had to go ahead with one for Faery Blood, my NaNo Project. I shared it with all my NaNo buddies, so I figure it’s only fair to share it with you too.
When I saw this model’s picture on iStockPhoto, I knew she was perfect, because she looked exactly as I had pictured my main fae character, Eilidh. The only thing I had to do was turnĀ her reddish-blonde hair white, and lighten her eyes about four shades.
Do you ever make mock-covers (or real covers, if you’re indie-pubbed) for your books?

I’ve never spent the time to work on mock covers…mostly because it just never occurred to me. But this is an awesome cover and inspires me to maybe look into playing with cover art. Interestingly, your fae actually closely resembles how I imagine one of my fae to look!
I haven’t before but I’m so going to now – what a fantastic idea!!

Great idea! Love your cover, as well! I’m stealing your practice of making a cover, blurbing it with NYTimes success — now, if I could just get a grip on the plot.
Talk with you soon.

I’m not very good working with graphics, but I love your mock cover for your NaNoWriMo book!

Love it! As you know… very striking.
Oh wow!! I love what you did with the original pic and made it into this beauty of a cover!!! It’s brilliant!! Yay!!!! It really really works!
I have visions of lots of velvety black for my imagined book cover at the moment!!
Take care

No,but maybe I should add the word ‘sequel’ across the cover of CassaStar and put that up at NaNo?
