A Real Author

I tell all writer friends, and I have many, that you become a writer/author the day you put your butt in the chair and your hands on the keyboard. The day you get your first publication acceptance is a wonderful one, but it doesn’t change the fact that you’ve been putting the work in for years, and perhaps even decades, prior to that.

There are those who may tell you that you’re a writer if you write, but only an author if you publish. I think that’s a distinction that only writers make. Readers, and they are the important ones in the equation, don’t play those kinds of word games. (I suppose if they did, they would be writers themselves — word games are our specialty.)

All of that being said, I will admit that seeing my name on the newly released cover of my debut novel made it all seem real in a way that hadn’t before. My publisher wrote to me over the weekend to let me know that my cover was finished, and after a few minor changes, it’s done. It isn’t what I had imagined, but the more I look at it (and I have spent a lot of time looking out over the past two days), the more I love it. The model they used is strikingly pretty, and although she doesn’t look exactly like I had pictured my main character to look, the image really does capture the feel of the book, and that’s perhaps more important.

I’ve been waiting on receiving this to do a blog redesign. So, over the next few days (or weeks, depending on how well my WIP behaves), expect to see something a little different here at IndiaDrummond.com.

For those of you who haven’t seen the blurb for Ordinary Angels, here it is:

Most of Zoë’s friends are dead, but she doesn’t mind because they died long before she met them. Then one Tuesday night an angel takes her salsa dancing and turns her world upside down. Grim reality closes in when she discovers a body in her company’s boiler room and Higher Angels accuse her best ghost friend of murder. Knowing she’s the only one who can stand against them, Zoë resorts to lying, stealing and summoning. In the end, getting blood on her hands forces Zoë to question herself.

So what do you think? If you didn’t know me, would this cover draw you in? Enough to buy the book? Or at least pick it up and read the blurb on the back?

EDIT 19 JUNE 2011: Latest news! Ordinary Angels is in the process of moving publishing houses. Because of this, its old cover art is gone and buy links will be unavailable until September 1st, 2011. However, as of that date, it will be available in print and as an ebook worldwide! To be notified of its return and to be eligible to win a free copy upon its re-release, please join my newsletter.

  4. It’s a gorgeous book — can’t wait to buy a dozen copies and give them to everyone. The title font is a vast improvement; I actually can read it.

Yes, it would draw me. I agree the model is lovely and, maybe Zoe does look like that. who knows? I’ve spent years trying to figure out what Dean Koontz’s “Odd Thomas” looks like — he changes from book to book.

Your concept for #Ordinary Angels is unique and compelling. Will there be sequels? Prequels? Hope so.

  5. I saw your cover when I accepted your friend request at MS this morning…and thought, “Wow, nice cover!” I think it looks great – definitely enticing, and I love the color scheme for the whole angels theme.

I’ll be looking forward to seeing the blog design, and reading the book too (um, if it’s in third person). ;-)

  6. Congratulations on the cover! I admit, it took my book cover to validate myself as an author. To me anyway.

  8. I guess I am against the flow here. I love the concept of your story but the cover doesn’t do a thing for me. I wouldn’t give it a second look. Gosh I hate having to say that but you asked for input and I am being honest.

The photograph is beautiful but as a cover not my cup of tea. This is just my humble (very humble) opinion.
