Being Obnoxious

I’m a nice person. Usually. Mostly. At least that’s what people tell me. But the truth is, sometimes I wish I could be just a little obnoxious and enjoy it. I knew a guy once who used to go around to AOL chat rooms (I’m showing my age) and troll–just to mess with people and get a rise out of them. He thought it was hilarious. I could never do that! Whenever I think I’ve hurt or upset someone, it really bothers me, sometimes for years! I suppose it’s my belief in karma that keeps me on the straight and narrow. Not the ATM-style karma of getting back what you put in, but the idea that the universe brings you what you need. So if the universe thinks you’re an ass, it might very well deliver an ass-whoopin.

Oh, sometimes something will get my dander up a bit, but that’s really more righteous indignation than genuine obnoxiaâ„¢. But generally, I keep my mouth shut and don’t goad, even when, in my estimation, people really have it coming. (Of course, I’m sailing close to the wind in the karmic field by even judging if other people deserve a poke with the goad-stick anyway, but I’m living on the edge today.)

However, that doesn’t stop me from enjoying a bit of spectator snark. So in that spirit, I give you The Best Obnoxious Responses To Misspellings On Facebook.

Here’s a sample that just cracked me up:

I should add in here that I’m not a very good speller myself. Without spell-check and the help of beta readers and editors, I’d probably look like a big doofus at least half the time. I noted on FB recently that I always spell occasionally wrong (in fact, spell-checking in WP informs me I just did it AGAIN in this sentence), which leans toward irony. So with a few exceptions, I don’t correct people’s spelling. I figure that would be just setting me up for a bit karmic spelling humiliation, like the girl who asked her sister via text message to make sure her dad didn’t lick her out that night. When the sister replied HUH? the girl texted back LOCK LOCK LOCK! (That story was from damnyouautocorrect.com, I do believe.) Some types of embarrassment just aren’t worth risking, in terms of tempting fate.

Question: Have you ever made a really embarassing typo? (And dear god, I hope it wasn’t on a tattoo, although that would technically be an inko, I suppose.)

Oh! And a quick note before I go… a HUGE thank you to all of you lovely readers who have helped keep Blood Faerie in the top 100 for contemporary fantasy (AMZ UK) since its launch a week ago! I’m stunned. I mean *I* like my books, but it always gives me a bubbly joy-moment to hear that someone else does too. Reviews have started coming in, and it’s really wonderful news. So THANK YOU to my readers, reviewers, and cheerleaders. You’ve made this the best week for me!

  1. Unfortunately I had to purchase at Amazon.com because AmZ UK wouldn’t allow me to purchase for my Kindle from there! :o ( Never mind, at least I’ve got the book!

PS: I hope this post wasn’t sparked from our discussion on FB yesterday? I really hadn’t intended for it to be confrontational. xoxo

    • Oh that’s fine! I appreciate all readers, of course! I know how that is. I used to have to buy books from the Kindle US store as well, until they opened a Kindle UK store, and now I have to buy from there. I’m hopeful that Amazon will continue to open more global markets, but until then, I’m just glad people from all over have access to the book.

  2. That open mouthed smile was supposed to be a sad face. Don’t know what happened there :-/

  4. It is entirely possible that all of us, somewhere, have some blind spot when it comes to writing. Unless, of course, you are some academic geek who has no life and, therefore, has nothing worthwhile to write about!

My failing, apart from the odd spelling confusions is dialogue! I can never, ever, remember if it’s a comma of a full stop and should that be an upper case letter? My wall is so festooned in notes about it that it takes me hours to write anything containing dialogue because I can never find the note that I want.

Incidentally: Amazon will not ship very much to Malaysia, and other Far Eastern countries so Kindle is definitely ‘out’! My friend tells me he has downloaded ‘Blood Faerie’ on to a thumb drive that he is going to send me as soon as he gets my money!! Tightwad! He is Scottish, of course. Oops! Sorry!

All the very best to you, India.

    • Hmm. I wonder why not Malaysia? That’s a real shame!

Well, I do hope you are able to get a copy of my book. If not, write to me, and I’ll see what I can do to help.

  5. I don’t correct people’s spelling on Facebook or Twitter or even blogging. It seems pretentious and arrogant. I’m a good speller, but I know I’ve made my own typos! It’s especially easy to do texting on a cell phone when you use the T9 function.

    Congrats on “Blood Faerie”!!!

  6. LOL! I laugh in the face of spelling mistakes! (I, like you, rely far too much on spell-checker) so I’m sure I’ve messed up at some point ;)

Thanks for the giggle, India! And continued good luck with Blood Faerie–it’s a fantastic book and deserves the great reviews it’s getting!

  7. Yes I have! And I usually go back and add a comment to correct it.

  8. Oh yes I have and I posted it on facebook..I was posting from my smartphone once and posted something that was suppose to say “I need to ship my edits off” and I posted ” I need to shit my edits”. Yes people were cracking up…

  9. I’ve seen this before on Facebook, but it was worth another look. I’m always tempted to point out spelling and grammar mistakes on Facebook, but I’ve only done so with my nephew. He’s now 14. When he was 13, he sent me a friend request but I ignored it. Then he nagged me about it. I tried to make him unfriend me by pointing out his mistakes, but he wasn’t persuaded.

  10. Spelling used to be my strong point, but sometimes I struggle with certain words. I do have to smile at your example above.

I downloaded your book via US Amazon, as like Jessica I cannot do UK. Pain sometimes, I wish we could use both.

    • That’s quite all right, Glynis! Those US sales are great too. It’s just a lot bigger listing, so it takes even MORE sales to get into the top categories there, but every single sale helps and is very much appreciated!

  11. India, great post – I’m a spelling freak, but I don’t correct for writers on line unless I know them well. It’s usually an oversight, but if I see the same error cropping up for the same author, then I might mention it. Wrong words being used like Past vs Passed, though…I’d have to say something!

One error I made recently was reign vs. rein…Weird how it’s always on someone else’s blog so I can’t even correct it!

btw, congrats on Blood Faerie – knew it would be a success!

  12. I don’t think I have ever corrected anyones spelling. It’s usually an oversight and not something they meant to do so why go out of your way to make them feel publicly stupid about it. It’s just ridiculous. It’s akin to getting the shy kid out to the front of class and informing the class why he’s so stupid. Seriously. Typos’ and mix up between past and passed happen. You never know if they wrote the post at 03.18 in the morning like I’m writing this.

Would people be so blunt and honest if they weren’t hiding behind a computer?
